Abstract
It is recommended that all young people should do at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. NICE guidance suggests that exercise should be encouraged on a regular basis in young people with diabetes to reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. However, physical activity can pose additional challenges for the management of glycaemia. Following reports that young people had been unsuccessfully trying to access gym facilities independently in the local area, the authors developed evidence-based guidelines and a training package for gym staff to improve opportunities for young people with diabetes to participate in physical fitness programmes. This article outlines the background and development of these guidelines in addition to the training process.
