35 - Introduction of a learning checklist: a survey of trainees

Published Date: 19th December 2017

Publication Authors: Kainth R

Methods

Following the publication of an educational checklist in the RCoA Bulletin [1], we introduced an adapted checklist in our anaesthetic department as an aid to maximising the learning potential for trainees during operating lists. The checklist was incorporated into the induction packages for new anaesthetic trainees of all grades at the hospital along with a presentation from the college tutor. Thirty

trainees were anonymously surveyed regarding the use of the learning checklist.

Results

Despite all trainees having been shown the checklist [1] during their induction, 15 (50%) stated that it was unfamiliar to them. Of the 15 trainees familiar with the checklist only two (13%) used the checklist during that operating list. Both of these trainees found it to be helpful citing reasons such as gaining consultant feedback, engaging the consultant with learning, completion of workplace-based

assessments and gaining knowledge. In addition, both of the trainees that used the checklist would recommend it to other trainees. Suggestions for improvement included making consultants more aware of the checklist and simplifying our modified checklist by removing some of the additional word content.

Discussion

This survey suggests that those trainees who used the checklist found it enhanced their educational development during that operating list. This is in keeping with similar findings from the original publication in the RCoA Bulletin. The key to increasing the use of the checklist is through increasing the awareness of the checklist among both trainees and consultants. By outlining the benefits for educational and professional development for both the trainee and the trainer we hope we can inspire more of our colleagues to commit to trying a different approach to training in the theatre environment.
