Conclusion: In patients with PFO-related stroke aged 18–60 years, PFO closure plus time-limited antiplatelet therapy is the recommended strategy for secondary prevention of recurrent stroke, with a low rate of complications. Further RCTs are required to test whether and in which patients over 60 years of age with stroke and PFO should be treated with PFO closure.
