Aims
NICE guideline NG17 recommend individual care plans agreed with the person with type 1 diabetes (PWT1D), reviewed annually and to include diabetes education provision. Where and how this education should be delivered is up for debate. A group was established in Merseyside to look at education offered to PWT1D across the area and establish any gaps in provision.

Methods
The group developed a structured questionnaire to establish the views of PWT1D on education provision. PWT1D were asked about topics, location, frequency, format and times.

Results
A total of 33 questionnaires were returned.

  • The top 5 Topic choices: Blood glucose levels looking for patterns and making changes 73%, Healthy Eating 67%, Technology 64%, Coping with type 1 diabetes and psychological impact 64%, How food and drinks affect blood glucose levels along with Exercise were 61%,
  • Location for education: Diabetes Centre 64%, Community Health Centre 21%, Non NHS 21%, Don't Mind 33%.
  • Education should be offered: When diagnosed 39%, 3–6 months after diagnosis 30%, 6–12 months after diagnosis 6%, every year 58%.
  • Number of sessions: 1–2 sessions 21%, 4 sessions 12%, Don't Mind 42%, not prepared to attend any sessions 12%.
  • The most popular time was weekday evenings 39%; least popular were weekday mornings and weekends 7%.
  • 76% of PWT1D felt online programme/resources would be useful.

Conclusions
There was variation in responses; however, there were clear preferences identified by those PWT1D who replied to the questionnaire. This information will form the basis for further discussions related to education provision for PWT1D in this region.
